Poland shocks the local audience and rolls over Italy


2009 Junior World Championships - European Qualifications

La Spezia, Italy, May 17, 2009. In the final competition day of European Qualification Tournament to the Men’s U21 World Championships Poland beat Italy 3:0 and thus notched the sole ticket available for the major competition to be staged this coming summer in India. Poland totally controlled the match from the beginning with a solid service and effective blocks, while Italy committed too many errors especially in reception and in the serving area. Italy started well in the first set but did not exploit the opportunity to build up a reassuring margin.
Poland recovered thanks to many aces and as soon as they regained the lead the Poles did not leave any chance for an Italian comeback (25-19). The second set confirmed Poland’s supremacy while Italy had many difficulties to find a good rhythm. The Italian coach, Luigi Schiavon, tried to replace the setter but the result didn’t change with a clear 15-25 for Poland. The start of the third set was a monologue for the Polish team which seemed quickly ready for celebrating the victory but at 8:15 Italy with some spectacular plays performed an unbelievable comeback up to 15:16. Nevertheless, after the second technical time-out, Poland replied in a strong way with a break of seven points, Italy didn’t find the strength to react and lost again the set at 19-25. Poland fully deserved to win the pool showed a high-level volleyball throughout the whole tournament.
In the other match scheduled for this afternoon Romania beat Israel with a clear 3:0, closing Pool D in third place. The Romanian team was much stronger than the opponents and after a good match with Italy replied a convincing performance. The first set was fought in the beginning but then Romania took a good advantage and seized it at 25-21. The start of second set had the same script with Israel trying to contain the gap up to 21:20. Romania however remained quiet and with a positive attack obtained a break of two decisive points, winning the set 25-23. In the third set the Romanian team immediately made the difference creating a large gap, Israel was in great difficulty and eventually lost the set 25-17.
