Athens - A Greek football fan was stabbed to death and another seriously injured in a fight near Athens after a match between the country's two largest clubs, Panathinakos and Olympiakos, reports said Thursday. The incident occurred outside a cafeteria in the seaside town of Loutsa, located approximately 20 kilometres east of Athens, after the 25-year-old victim and his friend got into a heated argument with Panathinaikos fans following a match where Olympiakos scored a 4-0 victory in the Greek Cup. The victim's father told Greek state television NET that his son and 26-year-old friend were out celebrating their team's victory when the argument began. Police have said the incident, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday, was probably due to the ongoing rivalry between fans of the two teams. The injured man was taken to hospital where he is being treated in intensive care. Last year, a Panathinaikos fan was stabbed to death during a fight between Olympiakos and Panathyinaikos supporters before a women's volleyball game in Athens.
